Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is the build up of fluid in the soft tissues when the lymph system is damaged or blocked, causing swelling that usually affects the arm or leg but can also affect the head, neck, breast, trunk and genital region.

It can occur following breast cancer surgery or any other cancer surgery where lymph nodes are removed or damaged.

The most important thing with lymphoedema is early detection and being aware of the signs and symptoms as in the early stage, there may be no visible swelling.

Ideally, after having surgery, it is worthwhile seeing a lymphoedema therapist to gain education of what to look out for and how to prevent lymphoedema. After the onset, it becomes a chronic condition that requires lifetime management and has a large physical, social and psychological impact on patients.

Signs and symptoms:

  • A feeling of heaviness in the limb
  • Pain in the limb
  • Tingling or pins and needles in the limb
  • Noticing rings, clothing is tighter on the affected side

Treatment includes:

  • Education and advice
  • Skincare
  • Exercise
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Compression bandaging
  • Compression garment prescription
  • Ongoing surveillance/prevention
